Jenson Brooksby will face off with fellow American Tommy Paul in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday. The match will be played on an outdoor hard surface with the winner progressing to the last 16 where a tie with either three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray or the seeded Roberto Agut awaits. Paul won the only other previous meeting between the two in Cincinnati five months ago. Both players have never progressed past this round with Brooksby appearing at his tournament debut in 2023. The 22-year-old is ranked 39th and defeated second seed Casper Ruud in four sets (dropping the third) in the 2nd round. It was his biggest upset thus far in his career. He also needed four sets to get the better of Australian Christopher O’Connell in the 1st round, bouncing back to claim the last three sets after dropping the first and has moved up one place in the live ranking to 38th. He has never broken into the ATP Top 30 with his highest placing being 33rd. Brooksby has played six matches in 2023 with his only loss coming in the semi-finals in Auckland to 12th seed Cameron Norrie.
Tommy Paul has been the least active of the two in 2023, playing only four matches. He’s won three of those matches with the latest being a five-set thriller against Alejandro Fokina to progress to this round. Ranked 34th in the live rankings, the 25-year-old was on the brink of elimination after dropping the second and third sets against the seeded Spaniard but regained his composure to produce just 18 unforced errors against 29 by Fokina in the final two sets. He had a much easier time in the first round against Jan-Lennard Struff, needing two hours and six minutes less to win in straight sets. He was eliminated in the second round at the last two Australian Open tournaments and reached the third round in 2020.
