Only one seeded player remains in the bottom half of the women's singles draw. That's Ons Jabeur who takes on Maria Bouzkova and the winner of that faces a German unseeded opponent. Tatjana Maria is the world number 103 and is up against world number 97 Jule Niemeier. Maria is a mother-of-two and was not expected to reach the quarter finals at Wimbledon. The second round would have been good after a run of eight main draw losses in Grand Slam events and one loss in the first qualilfying round. Another loss looked possible when going a set down to Astrid Sharma in the first round of this tournament. However, she fought back to get her first Grand Slam win since the 2018 US Open. Her form has continued with a three set win over 20th seed Sonya Cirstea, beating fifth seed Maria Sakkari and then 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko after again going a set down.
Now the 34-year-old takes on the highly promising Jule Niemeier. The world number 97 is playing the main draw of a Grand Slam for only the second time in her career. The other appearance was at the French Open this month, losing in round one. 2021 saw her trying to qualify for Wimbledon but losing in the third round. Now she doesn't have to qualify and got a first main draw win at Wimbledon when beating Wang Xiyu. That set up a round two match against second seeded Anett Kontaveit. The German won that with ease, losing just four games. Wins have followed against Lesia Tsurenko (needing a final set) and an impressive straight sets win on Centre Court against Heather Watson. Back her to win this and get into the semi-finals.
