Fourth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and 15th seed Jannik Sinner will face off in Round four of the Australian Open on Sunday in this outdoor hard court Grand Slam. Tsitsipas is the highest remaining seed in the top half of the draw. The winner of this match takes on either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Jiri Lehecka. It will be the fifth time that the two will be going head to head and the second time in succession in Australia. Tsitsipas, a semi-finalist here in the last two editions, has the upper hand against his seeded counterpart, having won four of those previous five meetings. The Greek ace got the better of Sinner in the quarter-finals of last year’s tournament in straight sets of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 and marched to his third Australian Open semi-final. Currently fourth in the live ranking, the 24-year-old is in sublime form having won 14 straight matches in singles and doubles. He hasn’t dropped a single set in the previous three rounds and in total has just spent five hours and 38 minutes on the court. He defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets in two hours and six minutes, the longest he has been on the court in Melbourne. Against Sinner, the quality of opposition will be much stiffer though. Before Sunday’s match though, Stefanos together with younger brother Petros Tsitsipas, will on Saturday play in the Doubles round of 32 against the pair of Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski.
After cruising in his first two matches, Jannik Sinner was forced to dig deep to progress to the fourth round by the unseeded Marton Fucsovics. The third round tie witnessed five sets with Sinner recovering from 2-0 down to get the win. Sinner’s only victory against Tsitsipas was on clay in Rome in 2020. Sunday’s match will be only the second time that the two have met on a hard surface. The 21-year-old Italian came into the tournament after having reached the quarter-finals of the singles and doubles in Adelaide. Last year saw him drop out of the ATP Top 10 despite reaching the quarter-finals of three Grand Slams and he will most definitely be looking to climb back with a strong showing in Melbourne.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is on form and has the upper hand in previous meetings with Jannik Sinner. The Italian showed grit in the third round to come back from two sets down to win, which was the first time in his young career and will be buoyed by that. We however feel Tsitsipas is playing the better of the two at the moment and will progress to the quarter finals.
