Winning this title can see Daniil Medvedev take over from Novak Djokovic as the world number one next month. The Russian second seed faces Stefanos Tsitsipas (seeded fourth) in the Australian Open semi-final. Medvedev is bidding to win his second successive Grand Slam after success at the 2021 US Open. He's been in three previous Grand Slam finals and a win here will mean he's in the Australian Open title decider for the second year in a row. He nearly didn't get this far though after going two sets to love down to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter final. He fought back to get the win though to keep his title hopes alive. He's had eight previous matches against Tsitsipas and won six of them. His Greek opponent won the last match but that was on clay last year.
Tsitsipas has only been in one previous Grand Slam final. That was in Paris last year where he lost to Novak Djokovic. This is his third Australian Open semi-final, the others being in 2019 and 2021. He's yet to get to the final though. Tsitsipas won two titles last year, both on clay courts. He was ultra-consistent in the first half of 2021 but after that loss at Roland Garros, his form dipped slightly before a revival during the American hard court season. He's not had an easy route to the last four of this tournament. He had two four-setters before having to win the last two sets to get past Taylor Fritz in the last 16. It was easier in the quarter finals with a straight sets win over Jannik Sinner. This is going to be tougher and the tip is for a Medvedev win.
