Rafa Nadal has won the Indian Wells title on three previous occasions but the last win was nine years ago. He won the Australian Open this year after a long gap and bids to do the same here when facing Taylor Fritz in the final. Nadal wasn't sure how things would work out after he made his comeback from injury in January. Winning three titles in a row and making the Indian Wells final probably wasn't what he expected. That's what he has done though and is still to taste defeat in 2022. He beat Carlos Alcarez in the semi-final and has only dropped two sets in his way to the final. He's had one previous match against Taylor Fritz. That was the final of the Mexican Open in 2020 and Nadal won, losing just five games.
Taylor Fritz is the 20th seed for this tournament. He has a good Indian Wells record having reached the semi-final last year. This is his seventh ATP Tour final but only on grass in Eastbourne three years ago has he won one. This is his best performance of the year, beating his quarter final in Dallas. He's had wins over two seeds to reach this final, the highest being seventh seed Andrey Rublev in the semi-final. This is a big step up though and Nadal can win this in straight sets.
