Rafa Nadal takes on Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Australian Open. There's so much at stake in this mouth watering final. A win for Nadal will be a record breaking 21st Grand Slam singles title. For Medvedev, it'll be his second successive Grand Slam title and he'll take over from Novak Djokovic as world number one next month. Nadal is the sixth seed for this tournament, four below his opponent. You have to go back to November 2019 for the last time Nadal beat a top five ranked player on a surface other than his beloved clay. That was in the Tour Finals where he beat Daniil Medvedev for the second time that year. The other time was in a titanic five-set US Open final. Nadal has been unbeaten since making his return from injury. He won a Melbourne tournament and now he's in his sixth Australian Open final. He's lost the last four and only in 2009 did he win this title. Nadal has had two four-set matches and a five-setter against Denis Shapovalov. He beat seventh seeded Matteo Berrettini in his semi-final.
Only once in four previous meetings has Daniil Medvedev beaten Nadal. That was in their last meeting at the Tour Finals in 2020. The last three matches against the Spaniard have all gone to a final set, that may well happen again this weekend. Not since the year 2000 has a player other than Djokovic, Federer or Nadal won two two Grand Slam mens singles titles in a row. Andre Agassi did it then and Medvedev has the chance to equal that achievement this weekend. He's won his last nine matches and in Grand Slam tournaments had 13 wins in a row. It's not been an easy route to the final though and he so nearly lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter finals. He's become a player who regularly wins titles, with four last year. Back him to win this but it's likely to be in four or five sets. A tie-break is also possible. Medvedev has had seven in six matches.
