Rafael Nadal has only once lost a semi-final at Roland Garros. The fifth seed aims to reach yet another final with a win over third seeded Alexander Zverev. After his late-night battle with Novak Djokovic on Tuesday/Wednesday, he'll be glad this semi-final doesn't take place until Friday afternoon in a rather strangely scheduled tournament. Nadal beat Djokovic in four sets and is now only two wins away from extending his record at Roland Garros to 14 titles. It'd be his 23rd Grand Slam win and that'd take him two clear of Djokovic and Federer. Nadal has won three titles this year and made the final at Indian Wells. He's yet to win a clay court tournament this year but it may only be a question of time. He has won three of his four matches against Zverev that have been played on clay and is 6-3 up overall on the German.
Alexander Zverev has two targets over the next few days. One is to win his first ever Grand Slam title, the other to take over as the world number one. The latter will be achieved if he can win the French Open title this year. Zverev is yet to win a title this year but he's been getting close. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz (a defeat avenged in the last round) in Madrid but blamed a late-night semi-final that was followed by the final in the afternoon. He also reached the last four in Monte Carlo and Rome. His toughest match on the way to this semi-final wasn't against Alcaraz but Sebastian Baez in round two. He had to come from two sets down to win that one. This looks like being another battle and one that's going to be played in daylight for a change. Nadal is in top form on the court he loves, back him to win this.
