Asian champions Qatar are set to take on African champions Algeria in one of the semi final clashes at the Arab Cup which is hosted in Qatar. The two giants face off on the back of contrasting outcomes in the quarter finals, and Qatar will be the more confident, coming from a 5-0 win over UAE. Qatar have won all their four matches at this competition, scoring 11 goals and conceding just one. They have two straight clean sheets going to this game and in their last three matches they’ve scored two or more goals in each.
Algeria have drawn each of their last two matches. In their final group game, they drew 1-1 with Egypt, and finished second in the group. At the quarters, they had to come from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Morocco, then won it 5-4 on post match penalties. They will have a tougher game here, and once again they will be without Yacin Titraoui, who was shown a direct red card in their final group game. Algeria have conceded two more goals than Qatar and scored two less. In the shaky nature of their last two matches, they will be the underdogs going to this game. The fact that they had to play 120 minutes and go to penalties will not favor them, taking on the hosts, who won comfortably in 90 minutes.
Qatar have won all their matches at the Arab Cup; they’ve clearly benefited from playing at home and have been scoring a lot of goals. Defensively they’ve also been solid, with three clean sheets in their four matches. They face a side that has struggled a bit in recent matches. Algeria have drawn their last two matches ahead of this and haven’t been as good defensively as Qatar, so we will back Qatar to win.
