Jessica Pegula bids to make it three Grand Slam quarter finals this year. The American is the eighth seed in the US Open and takes on Petra Kvitova who is seeded 21st. Pegula has never previously made it past the third round in her home Grand Slam. It's been a consistent year for her though and only Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur have earned more ranking points than her. Pegula is up to sixth in the live rankings (a career high) and will rise a further place if beating Swiatek. Her American hardcourt season has been successful with a semi-final in Toronto and last eight reached in Cincinnati. This tournament has seen her make steady progress but had to go to three sets to beat Yuan Yue in the last round. The second set was lost but then the third won to love.
A win for Petra Kvitova will take her into her first Grand Slam quarter final since a last four appearance at the French Open in 2020. It's five years since her last quarter final at the US Open. Form hasn't been great in the past couple of years for Kvitova but has picked up of late. She'd slipped to 34th in the rankings but now has a live ranking of 19th and can go as high as 14th if winning this match against Pegula. Only two matches have been played by her in this tournament as Kvitova received a second round walkover against Kalinina. The last round was a tough battle against ninth seeded Garbine Muguruza and Kvitova got through by winning a third set tie-break. She's won both of her previous matches against Pegula and is yet to drop a set. The American looks in good form though and this should be a tight match. Go for over 21.5 games to be played.
