When you just keep on losing Grand Slam matches, you don't imagine playing in a semi-final. However, that's what has happened to Tatjana Maria as she faces third seeded Ons Jabeur for a place in the Wimbledon final. The 34-year-old mother of two is the world mumber 103 first played in a Grand Slam event 15 years ago but before this tournament had never got past the third round of one. Not one of her last eight Grand Slam main draw matches had been won and you can add a first quallfying round defeat at the 2021 US Open to that list. Women's singles tournaments do tend to keep throwing up unseeded players who reach the latter stages, even win them. Maria last won a Grand Slam singles match in 2018 at the US Open, now she's one match away from a final. That didn't look too likely when losing the first set to Astrid Sharma in round one. The German fought back and since then has had wins over 20th seeded Sonya Cirstea (three sets again needed), fifth seed Maria Sakkari, 12th seeded Jelena Ostapenko (coming from a set down) and then in the quarter finals, Jule Niemeier after again losing the first set.
Ons Jabeur is a good friend of her opponent. The Tunisian is more used to playing with her friends two daughters than playing her in a major semi-final. Jabeur is also playing in her first Grand Slam semi-final. Her best in the past has been quarter finals in Paris and at the 2021 Wimbledon championships. Jabeur has been in good form for most of the year and on all surfaces. Titles have been won in Madrid on clay and then the German Open on grass. Two other clay court finals have been reached as the Tunisian has made her way up to second in the world rankings. Seeded third here, only one set has been lost in this tournament. That was in the quarter finals when losing the first set to Marie Bouzkova. There have been three previous meetings between these two players. Maria won one of those but that was five years ago. The most recent match between them was four years ago. That was a qualifying match in Beijing with Jabeur winning for the loss of only five games. This match is slightly more important than that. Back Jabeur to win in straight sets.
