It's a massive few days for Novak Djokovic and tennis history. Aside from the battle of the teenagers in the women's singles, Novak Djokovic bids to win a calendar Grand Slam and a record 21st Grand Slam title. None of that will be possible if he doesn't win this semi-final against Alexander Zverev. Djokovic was recently beaten by Zverev at the OIympics with the German going on to win the title. Djokovic has already won the first three Grand Slams of 2021 and now bids to make it four by winning the US Open for the first time since 2018. He hasn't been at his very best in this tournament and has dropped a set in all but one of his matches so far.
He's had nine previous matches against Zverev and leads 6-3. He'd won five in a row before that loss in Tokyo. That was the first time he'd beaten Djokovic in three years and doing so again would see him make it to the US Open final for the second year in a row. Last year nearly saw him win his first Grand Slam title. He led Dominic Thiem by two sets to love but still managed to lose. Zverev has won four titles this year and two were in Masters tournaments, just below the level of a Grand Slam. He's been in good form again in this US Open and only lost two sets. This is the stage o a tournament when Djokovic ups his game and if he does that, then he can see off the challenge of Zverev.
