Fifth seeded Casper Ruud could become the new world number one this weekend. He'll have to win the US Open to do so but first of all has a tough quarter final against the 13th seeded Matteo Berrettini. It won't get much easier in the semi-final with the winner of this match up against either Nick Kyrgios or Karen Khachanov. Ruud began this tournament as the world number seven but is up to a career high fourth in the live rankings. With Medvedev losing in the last 16 and Alexander Zverev out injured, a title win for Ruud will take him to the top of the rankings. If he wins this match, he'll be second. Ruud lost to Nadal in this year's French Open final but this is only the second time he's made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam. Hey' s won three titles this year but recently lost to the then world 229 Ben Shelton in Cincinnati. This tournament has seen him drop sets to Tim van Rijthoven and Corentin Moutet.
Matteo Berrettini began the US Open as the world number 14 but he's far better than that. Losing the points earned when reaching the 2021 Wimbledon final and long spells off the court due to injury and illness haven't helped him. He's down to 15th in the live rankings because the Italian is defending the points he got when making it to the quarter finals in New York last year. A win over Ruud will equal his best US Open performance of a semi-final in 2019. This year has seen him win two titles (both on grass) but he also reached a clay court final. He's been in good form in New York but has also had a battle on his hands. He's dropped sets in three of his matches and had to go to a final set to get past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the fourth round. There have been five previous meetings between the pair with Ruud 3-2 up. This should be a tight match, back the more experienced Berrettini to get the win.
