Leylah Fernandez is the 17th seed in the women's singles at Roland Garros. However, that makes her the highest seed left in the bottom half of the draw. The Canadian takes on unseeded Italian Martina Trevisan in the quarter finals with both looking to reach the last four of this tournament for the first time. Fernandez lost to Emma Raducanu in the US Open final last year but until now has been struggling to build on that, much like the player who beat her. The Canadian hadn't got past the last 32 of a clay court event this season before the French Open. Her form has improved at Roland Garros where in two previous visits, she'd never made it past the third round. This is only the second time Fernandez has made it past round three of a Grand Slam and might just fancy her chances of reaching another final. This tournament has seen her beat Kristina Mladenovic and Katerina Siniakova in straight sets. She then beat Belinda Bencic (seeded 14th) and then the 27th seed Amanda Anisimova, both going to a final set.
Unseeded Martina Trevisan is in her second French Open quarter final. The other was achieved two years ago and this is the only Grand Slam in which she's got past round two. The Italian began this tournament ranked 59th but is up to 31st in the live rankings and will go into the top 30 with a win over Fernandez. Trevisan has won one tournament this year, that was a WTA 250 series event held in Rabat with Claire Liu beaten in the final and Garbine Mugurza earlier in the tournament. At Roland Garros, Trevisan has had wins over Harriet Dart, Magda Linette, Daria Saville and Aliaksandra Sasnovich and is yet to drop a set. This is a lot tougher though and the tip is for Fernandez to get the win and reach the last four.
