Leicester City’s season got worse with their away loss to Napoli in the Europa League on Thursday. They’ll get back to the pitch on Sunday at home to Newcastle United and hope to start a more stable run. Despite all their quality, Leicester are struggling to rise into the top half; they go to this game on 19 points in 11th place. Newcastle are 19th with 10 points. Leicester’s season has been characterized by a poor defence and as Wesley Fofana continues with recovery from injury, it seems the Foxes will go into the market in January. The 3-2 loss to Napoli means they have conceded two or more goals in seven of the last 10 now. Meanwhile, they have no clean sheet in 16 matches and at home in the league, both teams have scored in six of their last 10. Leicester have conceded 27 goals in the league so far; only three teams have conceded more ahead of round 16.
Newcastle United are one of the poorest sides this season and have the most porous defence after bottom placed Norwich’s. Their scoring run also isn’t the best, but they will be fired up going to this game, having won in their last outing. The 1-0 win over Burnley was the first this season and it also came with their first clean sheet in 13 matches. They have two clean sheets only this season, and both came against Burnley. Both sides have scored in three of Newcastle’s last five matches. A run of seven winless away matches this season, with four losses, places them as underdogs. Both teams have scored in five of those seven away matches, Newcastle managing no clean sheet, and failing to score in two.
Leicester are having a tough season and after dropping from the Europa League, Brendan Rodgers will demand a response here. His side meets a Newcastle team also in need of a break after a poor season so far. Both teams are characterized by poor defending and we expect the same here so back both to score.
