World number four Caroline Garcia is set to face off with 158th-ranked Laura Siegemund in the third round of the Women’s Singles of the Australian Open this Saturday at the Show Court Arena in Melbourne. It will be the second time the two go head to head. Garcia won the previous meeting between the two in straight sets in the first round of the French Open in 2021, though that was played on clay. The 29-year-old is playing in the third round of a year’s first major for the first time in three years. She was eliminated at the first round in 2022 and has only progressed past this stage once since her debut in 2011. In the previous two rounds, she faced off with two Canadians and won both in straight sets, beating 190th-ranked Katherine Sebov for the loss of three games with none lost in the second set.and Leylah Fernandez (ranked 40) in straight sets of 7-6, 7-5.
Laura Siegemund has never been past the third round in Australia and is playing in this stage for only the second time in her career with the first being six years ago. She entered the tournament ranked of 57th after struggling in the past with a knee injury. The 34-year-old has been forced to come back from dropping the first set in each of the first two rounds. She eliminated the seeded Irina-Camelia Begu in round two after getting the better of 52nd-ranked Lucia Bronzetti in round one. She has been the more active of the two in 2023 with a total of 13 matches played in Singles and Doubles. The German is currently up 35 places in the live ranking to 123rd and has been as high as 27th in her career.
Laura Siegemund has done exceptionally well to reach this round but comes up against a player that is just a cut above her. Garcia won the WTA Tour Finals last year and will be too tough an opponent for Siegemund. Our prediction is for Caroline Garcia to win in straight sets.
