The past two years saw Aryna Sabalenka win five WTA titles but she's yet to win one in 2022. The sixth seed takes on 22nd seeded Karolina Pliskova for a place in the US Open semi-final against either Iga Swiatek or Jessica Pegula. Sabalenka reached the semi-finals in New York last year, one of only two she has made it to in Grand Slam events. This year began with some surprise defeats as she began to slip down the rankings. Form has improved of late with a run to the last four in Cincinnati and two finals have been reached this year. One on grass and the other on clay when losing to Iga Swiatek in straight sets. Two sets have been lost on her way to this US Open quarter final. One to Kaia Kanepi, where she was close to defeat in the second set and then against Danielle Collins, again losing the first set.
Karolina Pliskova was the world number one five years ago but has fallen down the rankings this year. The points earned when getting to the 2021 Wimbledon final have been lost and that's why she slumped from seventh to 15th in the space of a week. It's not been a great year though and she's only 26th in the WTA Race for ranking points earned this year, compared to the eighth place held by her opponent. This is her first time past the second round of a Grand Slam this year. Pliskova recently showed some improved form with a semi-final in Toronto. This tournament has seen her in trouble a few times with three set matches against Magda Linette, Belinda Bencic and Viktoria Azarenka. Four previous meetings between the two players have been shared, though Pliskova has won the last two. Sabalenka looks in the better form though and can get the win here, possibly in three sets.
