Ajla Tomljanovic takes on Karolina Muchova in the US Open first round. Both players are unseeded and the winner takes on either 27th seeded Martina Trevisan or Eveginya Rodina in the second round. Tomljanovic is the world number 46 and has had some good results of late. The Australian reached the last eight in Cincinnati, including a win over Paula Badosa. That was her fifth quarter final of the year, the highlight being getting to the last eight at Wimbledon for the second year in a row. Tomljanovic has a best of a third round in the US Open, that was achieved last year.
Karolina Muchova has made the main draw of the US Open due to her protected ranking. Injuries have caused her to miss a lot of time on court and at the time of writing this preview is down at 235 in the world ranking. Her last match was in a WTA125 tournament in Concord, where she lost in the last 16 to Katrina Scott, retiring when a set and 4-0 down. That was her first tournament since a first round loss to Simona Halep at Wimbledon winning just five games. Four of her last five matches have been lost and that includes another retirement at the French Open. In seven tournaments this year, only one last 16 has been reached. Muchova was as high as 19th in the rankings last year but lost in the first round of the 2021 US Open. It's hard to back her at present. Go for a Tomljanovic win.
