Fifth seeded Casper Ruud takes on the 27th seed Karen Khachanov in the US Open semi-final. Ruud is up to second in the live rankings but will drop to third if Carlos Alcarez also reaches the semi-final. Winning the title will take Ruud to the top of the world rankings and even making the final will achieve that unless he then loses to Alcarez in the final. Ruud is in only his second Grand Slam semi-final. The other was at Roland Garros earlier this year where he went on to lose to Rafael Nadal in the final. His previous best in the US Open was making the third round two years ago. He beat Matteo Berrettini in straight sets in his quarter final but has dropped four sets in this tournament.
Karen Khachanov is in his first Grand Slam semi-final. His previous best was getting to the last eight in the 2019 French Open and the Wimbledon championships last year. This year has seen a third round in Australia and last 16 appearance at Roland Garros. Being Russian he couldn't play at Wimbledon but has made up for lost time with this run to the last four in New York. Three of the last five years have seen Khachanov beaten in the first round in New York. This year has gone much better for the world 31 who is now up to 18th in the live rankings and can climb another three places if beating Ruud. His big win in this tournament came when beat Nick Kyrgios in the last 16. He's dropped six sets so far in this tournament with two five-setters. There's only been one previous meeting between the pair. That was in 2020 when Ruud won a match played on clay in Rome. Ruud looks to be in the better form and can get the win here.
