Neither of these players have made the semi-final of a Grand Slam. Third seeded Carlos Alcarez takes on Jannik Sinner (seeded 11th) in the US Open quarter finals. Waiting for them in the last four are either Andrey Rublev or Frances Tiafoe. Alcarez has repeated the feat he achieved on his US Open debut last year by making the last eight. He's up to number two in the live rankings and has a chance of overtaking Rafa Nadal and becoming the youngest ATP Tour world number one. Alcarez is best known for his clay court abilities but did win the hard court Miami Masters earlier this year. On his way to this quarter final, he's only dropped sets in his fourth round five-set win over Marin Cilic.
Jannik Sinner is the world number 11 but a win over the third seed will take him up to eighth place. He has beaten Alcarez twice but those wins were on clay (when winning the 2022 Croatian Open final) and on grass at this year's Wimbledon. It's been a consistent year for the Italian who can boost his chances of making the ATP Tour finals if making it to the semi-final. He's currently 14th in the ATP Race but will be ninth if winning this match. Can he do that though? He's had a tougher route to the last eight with two five-setters and one four-set win. Back Alcarez to get the win here, it might take four or five sets though.
