World number one Iga Swiatek takes on 11th seed Jessica Pegula in the French Open quarter finals. Swiatek continues to be unbeaten since losing to Jelena Ostapenko in February. Monday saw the rare occurrence of her actually losing a set. That was the first set in her last 16 match against unseeded Zheng Qinwen. Swiatek had been in the lead in that set but ended up losing it on a tie-break. The Pole apparently began singing to herself in her head and it worked as she won the next two sets with only two games being lost. A win here will make it 33 straight victories as she bids to win her second French Open title. This is his third match against Pegula and the score line is currently 1-1. Pegula got a win three years ago but Swiatek was only ranked 66th at the time. The other meeting was in Miami this year as Swiatek won in straight sets on her way to winning the title. This is their first match on clay.
Jessica Pegula is in her second straight Grand Slam quarter final. The world number 11 is up two places in the live rankings and only Swiatek and Jabeur have earned more ranking points than her this year. Pegula had never previously made it past the third round of this tournament. It's been an up and down clay court season for the American. Before Roland Garros, the only time she'd made it past the last 16 was in Madrid where she lost to Ons Jabeur in the final. No player in the top 30 was beaten that week in a tournament Swiatek pulled out of. Only one seed has been beaten by her on the way to this quarter final. That was over the number 24 seed Tamara Zidansek. Two sets have been dropped by her so far in this tournament. The first was in the second round against Anhelina Kalinnini and then she had to come from behind to defeat Inna-Camilia Begu in the last 16. That doesn't bode well for a match against a dominant Swiatek. Back the top seed to win this in straight sets.
