Top seeded Iga Swiatek takes on the sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open semi-final. This is the first time that the world number one has reached this stage of the US Open. Although the Pole had a great run of form that saw her win six titles in a row, her last victory was in the French Open. In the lead up to this tournament, only one quarter final had been reached in four tournaments. Her form has dipped and that has been evident in this US Open and only her opponents struggles got her through the last 16 against Julie Niemier. A better performance was shown against Jessica Pegula in the last eight but there were still 32 unforced errors.
Aryna Sabalenka began this tournament ranked sixth but is down to seventh in the live rankings. That's because she's defending the points won when reaching the 2021 US Open semi-final. Making the final will see her rise to fourth spot 2022 didn't get off to a great start for the Belarusian with some losses to lowly ranked players. Form has improved of late though and this is her second semi-final in a row after getting to that stage at the Cincinnati Masters. This tournament has seen her have some struggles, especially against Kai Kanepi in the second round and Danielle Collins in the last 16. In both matches, Sabalenka had to come from a set down. The quarter finals saw her beat Karolina Pliskova in straight sets but needed a second set tie-break. Sabalenka did beat Swiatek last year but in 2022 has played and lost to her three times and won just 12 games. Swiatek is again the favourite to win this semi-final but unless she ups her game, it may well take three sets to do so.
