27th seeded Grigor Dimitrov bids to continue his good record in the Australian Open. He takes on unseeded Laslo Djere in the second round with the winner most likely to face Novak Djokovic in round three. Dimitrov was a semi-finalist here in 2017 and a beaten quarter finalist three times, most recently 2021. He does need to improve his recent Grand Slam record with only one third round appearance in the last seven played. Dimitrov was ranked 28th at the start of this tournament but has risen a place in the llve rankings. 2023 has only seen him play in the United Cup. He lost in three sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas but beat David Goffin. The first round of this Australian Open saw him defeat former Australian Open semi-finalist Aslan Karatsev in straight sets.
Laslo Djere was ranked 68th in the ranking list published this week. However, he's risen 10 places in the live rankings. He has the chance to go further up the list because of the small amount of points he has to defend in this tournament. His first round four-set victory over qualfier Zizou Bergs was the first time he's won a main draw match in the Australian Open. He's lost in the first round here for the past five years and before that won one qualifying match in two tournaments. He played two warm-up tournaments reaching the last 16 in Pune but losing to then world number 159 Maximilian Marterer. Better form was shown in Auckland with a win over Casper Ruud before losing to Constant Lestienne in the last eight. A win for Dimitrov is the most likely result here.
