Germany are in the driving seat in their UEFA Nations League quarter-final against Italy, heading into the return leg. In the first leg, Germany came from a goal down to beat Italy 2-1 at San Siro on Thursday. Below is our prediction for the return leg on Sunday.
For the first time in about 38 years, Germany recorded an away win over Italy. They are now eyeing a first ever spot in the Nations League finals and their home form will do them a lot of good.
While they are unbeaten in the last seven matches, Germany have posted straight wins in the last seven home matches. In the last three Nations League home matches, they scored 13 goals.
These are tough times for Italy. The former European champions are coming from two straight defeats. The defeat to Germany came after a 3-1 loss at home to France. Having managed just one clean sheet in the last 11 matches further complicates things for Luciano Spalletti’s men.
Though they scored in all of their last five matches, Italy conceded two or more goals in four of the five matches. The Italians have, however, been on some run away from home.
They have three straight wins on the road, beating France, Israel and Belgium.
Germany are on a seven-match unbeaten run against Italy and will be keen on another win here. That is not even the whole context of this game; matches pitting these two have in recent times been high scoring.
The last time Italy visited, they were thrashed 5-2 and Germany is never the place to hunt for glory either. Italy do have a decent away run and will hope it comes to the fore here as they chase this tie. Our prediction for Germany v Italy is for Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
