Matteo Berrettini has become one of the most consistent players in Grand Slam events. He takes on Gael Monfils in the last eight of the Australian Open. It's the fourth straight Grand Slam quarter final for the Italian and the other three saw him lose to Novak Djokovic. Last year, Berrettini lost in the fourth round of the Australian Open but never made it on court, pulling out with an injury. He's the seventh seed for this tournament but is up to sixth in the live world rankings. He can move up to fifth if making the last eight and Rafa Nadal doesn't. Berrettini's year didn't start too well, losing two of his three matches in the ATP Cup. He's played better in this tournament though but it's been a tough draw. He has lost four sets so far and had to go to the final set to defeat Carlos Alcarez. The fourth round saw him beat 19th seeded Pablo Carreno Busta without droppng a set.
Gael Monfils is seeded 17th and has already won one tournament this year. He won in Adelaide beating Karen Khachanov in the final and didn't drop a set in that event. The following week saw him lose to Thiago Monteiro in his first match, retiring early in the third set but it's still an improvement so far on a disappointing 2021. He dropped ten places in the rankings but is up to 16th in the live rankings and a win over Berrettini will take him to 13th. This is only his second Australian Open quarter final, the other being 17 years ago. He's yet to drop a set in this tournament but hasn't had the toughest of draws. This is much harder, go for the consistent Berrettini to reach the semi-final.
