Carabao Cup predicitons

The English Football League (EFL) Cup, referred to as the Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons, is widely considered to be the third most prestigious competition in England behind the Premier League and the FA Cup. The tournament was founded in 1960 and features all 92 clubs from the top four levels of the EFL - the Premier League, the Championship, League 1 and League 2. CARABAO CUP BETTING TIPS: THE FACTS TO KNOW

The Carabao Cup trophy

LOOK AT THE LINE-UPS

As is the case with many domestic cup competitions these days, clubs tend to play weakened line-ups for this competition. Often, the side that is chosen is almost completely different from that made for the last league fixture. This doesn't just apply to Premier League sides, but also those in the lower divisions. However, slightly stronger line-ups may be chosen when it comes to the latter stages of the competition and that should be expected going forward from this point on.

That being said, it is still the Premier League clubs that dominate the competition with the country's strongest clubs in particular proving to have a stranglehold over this trophy in recent years. In fact, you would have to go back to 2013 for the last time a club other than Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United or Chelsea lifted the trophy and only three times in the last 20 years has a team outside the traditional 'big six' been crowned champions.

There are always surprises in the cup competitions with the 2023/24 Carabao Cup being no exception. Gillingham knocked out Southampton in round one, the same stage where AFC Wimbledon beat Coventry and Crewe beat Sunderland, all two divisions lower than their opponents.

Shocks continued in round two as Salford put Leeds out 9-8 on penalties, Mansfield beat Sheffield Wednesday and Premier League Sheffield United also fell on spot kicks, to Lincoln. Round three saw Luton fall to Exeter, with League One Port Vale making it all the way to the quarter-final stage. Don't be afraid to back an outsider in the cup as shocks happen!

2024/25 Carabao Cup Prediction

Marcus Rashford celebrates his goal in the Carabao Cup final

Despite the clamour that the big clubs don't take this competition seriously, that is not reflected in the results of the winners of this trophy over the last couple of decades. Manchester City has won this competition in six of the last 10 seasons and with their squad depth it is easy to see why. They can field an entirely different starting 11 but still put enough talent on the pitch to beat the vast majority of teams in the country. They are the second most successful team in the history of the competition and can close the gap on Liverpool this season with another win.

Sadly our original prediction Manchester City were knocked out by Spurs in the last 16. Perhaps it is a perfect time for that team's bitter North London rivals to pick up the trophy now.

Our prediction to win the 2024-25 Carabao Cup is: Arsenal
