23rd seeded Diego Schwartzman faces JJ Wolf for the first time. It’s a second round Australian Open match with the winner facing 12th seeded Alexander Zverev or Michael Mmoh in round three. Schwartzman began this tournament ranked 26th and is up one place in the live rankings but was in the top 16 last year. He beat world number 188 Oleksii Krutykh in four sets (second set lost) in round one. That was his first win on the ATP Tour since last August. One match this year in Auckland saw him retire against Jenson Brooksby. It will boost his confidence as he prepares to take on a much tougher opponent and one that counts hard surfaces as one of his favourite courts to play on. The Argentine has reached the fourth round of the Australian Open twice (most recently 2020) but lost at this stage last year..
American JJWolf is making his debut in the Australian Open main draw after twice losing in the qualifiers. Despite showing some jitters, he defeated Australian Jordan Thompson (ranked 21 places below him) in four sets, dropping the second. That 207 minute win has moved him up five places to 62nd in the live rankings. He’s only ever made it to the third round of a Grand Slam twice, both times being in the US Open. The 24-year-old reached the last 16 of the Auckland Classic earlier this month.
Having struggled on hard court surfaces in recent times we expect the trend to continue for the seeded Diego Schwartzman on Thursday with the unseeded Jeffrey John Wolf, impressive on hard courts. Wolf can get the win here.
