It's been six years since Britain had a player in the last eight of the men's singles at Wimbledon. Cameron Norrie has changed all of that though and the ninth seed takes on unseeded David Goffin in his first ever Grand Slam quarter final. The winner of this match will take on either top seed Novak Djokovic or tenth seeded Jannik Sinner in the last four. Norrie began this tournament ranked 12th but was 10th at one stage. No ranking points here of course but at least he's making headlines and that's not always been the case for him. Not even when he won Indian Wells last year and won two more tournaments in 2022. He's only dropped sets in one match in this tournament. That was in his second round encounter with Jaume Munar, where the Brit had to come from two sets to one down. Since then, he's won eight sets in a row. He's had one previous match against Goffin. That was last year with Norrie winning the first set but trailing in the second, when Goffin retired hurt.
It's five years since Goffin was ranked as high as seventh in the world. His ranking has fluctuated a great deal since then with his highest this year being 39th but his lowest 74th. At the start of this tournament, he was ranked 58th. He's won one tournament this year, that was on clay in Marrakech. There wasn't much of a grass court warm-up for him. The Belgian only played in Halle and drew Daniil Medvedev in his first match, losing in straight sets. He's had better luck at Wimbledon though and has made his way to his second quarter final. It hasn't been easy though with Ugo Humbert taking him to four sets. In the fourth round, he had to come from two sets to one down to beat 23rd seeded Frances Tiafoe. Norrie seems to have found better form and can get the win here.
