Daria Kasatkina is only seeded 20th but that makes her one of the highest surviving seeds at Roland Garros. The Russian takes on the 28th seed Camila Giorgi for a place in the quarter finals. Kasatkina is bidding to reach the last eight at Roland Garros for the second time after making it to the 2018 quarter finals. Kasatkina began this tournament ranked 20th but is up to 18th in the live rankings. Kasatkina has peaked at the right time of the year after reaching the semi-finals in her last tournament in Rome. That saw her get wins over Paula Badosa, Leylah Fernandez and Jil Teichmann and she's again in good form at the French Open. So far there have been victories over Rebecca Sramkova, Fernanda Contreras Gomez and Shelby Rogers. It's not been the toughest of routes to the last 16 with only ten games lost and two sets won 6-0. This is only her second match against Giorgi, the other was in 2020 in Lyon with Katakina winning the hard court match in three sets.
Camila Giorgi first played at the French Open in 2012 but this is her first time past the third round. Only once has the Italian reached a Grand Slam quarter final and that was at Wimbledon four years ago. Giorgi began this event ranked 30th but has risen to 24th in the live rankings and that beats her career high of 26th achieved three years ago. The 30-year-old has had a pretty poor year before this tournament. She arrived at Roland Garros having lost seven successive matches in singles tournaments. Giorgi did get a couple of victories in the Billie Jean King Cup in April but didn't beat anyone ranked in the top 90. It's all been turned around at Roland Garros though with wins over Zhang Shui (after losing the first set), Yulia Putintseva and then a win over the seventh seeded Aryna Sabalenka. Giorgi lost the first set but then won the next two for the loss of just one game. Back Kasatkina to get the win here.
