A look at the career of Nick Kyrgios is a rather frustrating one. He's got so much talent but his often appalling behaviour on court has limited his success. He takes on top seeded Daniil Medvedev looking to reach his first ever US Open quarter final. Kyrgios got to the final at Wimbledon this year but that was the first time past the fourth round of a Grand Slam since 2015. The Australian began this tournament ranked 25th but would be a lot higher if there had been ranking points at Wimbledon. Since that loss to Novak Djokovic in the last Grand Slam, Krygios has won a title in Washington and beaten Daniil Medvedev in Montreal. This week has seen him get wins over Thanasi Kokkinakis, Benjamin Bonzo (dropping a set) and JJ Wolf, so not the hardest route to the last 16.
Daniil Medvedev has lost three of his four previous matches against Kyrgios. Two were three years ago and his one win came in the 2022 Australian Open, their only match over best of five sets. Medvedev has a great record in New York and has reached at least the last four in each of the last three years. 2021 saw him win the title and that's still the only Grand Slam he has won. This year has seen him win just one tournament but he has climbed to world number one. He has work to do to keep that position and is currently only second in the live rankings. He's had comfortable wins over Stefan Kozlov, Arthur Rinderkneck and Wu Yibing without losing a set. Over five sets, back Medvedev to win this.
