18th seeded Cori Gauff is in her second French Open quarter final in a row. We're guaranteed an American player in the last four as Gauff takes on her compatriot Sloane Stephens. This is the only Grand Slam in which the 18-year-old has managed to reach the last eight. Three clay court tournaments were played by the American before heading to Roland Garros. They didn't go too well though with two last 16s in Madrid and Rome her best results but as you will read, that's better than her opponents has achieved. Better form has been shown by Gauff at Roland Garros. The world number 23 has had wins over Rebecca Marino, Alison Van Uytcanck, Kaia Kanepi and 31st seeded Elise Mertens. No sets have been dropped and two of the eight won were achieved without losing a game.
Sloane Stephens is a former finalist at Roland Garros. That was achieved four years ago in the days when the American was a top ten ranked player. A quarter final in Paris followed a year later but this is her first last eight in a Grand Slam event since then. Stephens began this event ranked 64th in the world but up to 46th in the live rankings. A win over Gauff will take her up to 30th. Stephens couldn’t have been that optimistic of a good performance. Four clay court tournaments this year hadn’t produced a single win. Her most recent loss was in Strasbourg to Nefusa Berberovic who was ranked 306th at the time. Stephens had trouble in the first round of this tournament, having to come from behind to beat qualifier Jule Niemeier. More problems were encountered in the second round when losing the first set to Sorana Cirstea but then winning the next two sets for the loss of only two games. The last 32 saw her end the run of Diane Parry in straight sets and then the 23rd seed Jil Teichmann was beaten for the loss of just two games. This is her first match against Gauff on clay. The only previous meeting saw Stephens get a straight sets win in the 2021 US Open. Gauff looks in the better form and can get the win to face either Leylah Fernandez or Martina Trevisan in the last four.
