Eighth seeded Casper Ruud bids to become the first Norwegian player to reach a Grand Slam final. He's up against 20th seeded Marin Cilic in the Roland Garros semi-final. The winner faces either Rafael Nadal or Alexander Zverev in the title decider on Sunday. Ruud beat Holger Rune in four sets in his quarter final and that win took him up to seventh in the live rankings. If he can win this semi-final, then Ruud will go above Carlos Alcaraz into sixth place. Rune had been knocked out in the third round at Roland Garros on his previous three visits. His best performance in a Grand Slam was reaching the fourth round of the 2021 Australian Open but now he has a chance of making a final. He also got to the last four in Rome this year plus the last eight in Barcelona and Munich, so it's been a consistent clay court season. He's beaten two seeds to date in this tournament, with wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Hubert Hurkacz.
Marin Cilic is the 20th seed and first played at Roland Garros in 2005 when his opponent was only six years old. He's reached two quarter finals here before but the last one was four years ago. 2019-2021 saw him win just two matches in the French Open but he's back in form this year. This is his first Grand Slam semi-final since the Australian Open in 2018 and he's bidding to get to his third final. Cilic began this tournament ranked 23rd in the world but is now up to 17th in the live rankings and a win over Ruud will see him go up another couple of places. He had to go to five sets to get past seventh seeded Andrey Rublev in the last eight. One of the new first-to-ten points tie-breaks was required to be won for Cilic to get to the last four. Before that win, only Marton Fucsovics had won a set off him. The 33-year-old has lost both of his previous matches against Ruud. One of those was on clay in Rome last year with Ruud winning in straight sets. Ruud can get another win here but it's likely to take him four or five sets to do so.
