Eighth seeded Casper Ruud faces a tight battle with Hubert Hurkacz in the Roland Garros last 16. His opponent is seeded four places below him and the winner of this match will have a quarter final against either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Holger Rune. Ruud can climb up to seventh in the rankings if he wins this match and Andrey Rublev loses to Jannik Sinner. The Norwegian has never reached a Grand Slam quarter final. His run at Roland Garros has equalled his best of a fourth round at the 2021 Australian Open. He's been knocked out in the third round for the past three years at Roland Garros but has finally made it to the last 16 here. Ruud has had a successful clay court season with a semi-final in Rome and the last eight in both Barcelona and Munich. Wins in Roland Garros this year have come against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (after losing the first set), Emil Russuvouri (in straight sets) and then a five-set win over 32nd seeded Lorenzo Sonego after trailing by two sets to one.
Hubert Hurkacz is enjoying his best run at Roland Garros. Four previous visits have produced just one win and he has lost in the first round for the past three years. He reached the Wimbledon semi-final last year but before this week that was the only time in nine Grand Slams that he'd got past round two. Hurkacz has had a good clay court season with quarter final appearances in both Monte Carlo and Madrid. Wins have not been against top ranked players though throughout the clay court season. At Roland Garros, his three wins have come against three unseeded players (one a qualifier) with the most notable victory being over David Goffin, who beat him in Rome. This is his first match against Ruud and its his opponent who should be backed to get the win. A side bet on a tie-break might also be profitable.
