We've reached the US Open semi-finals and are guaranteed a first-time Grand Slam winner. Not just that but if Carlos Alcaraz can beat Frances Tiafoe, he can move up to top spot in the live world rankings. Alcaraz would become the youngest ever world number one male player and will go top of the live rankings if winning this match. This is his first time in a Grand Slam semi-final and he's had a tough battle in the last two rounds to reach this stage of the US Open. He's had two five-set wins over Marin Cilic and in the last eight, an early morning win over Jannik Sinner. He'll need to beat Tiafoe for the first time in his career to reach this final. Their only previous meeting was last year on clay with Tiafoe winning in straight sets, both needing a tie-break.
France Tiafoe was ranked 26th at the start of this tournament. That was just two places below his career high but that's been surpassed now. He's up to 19th in the live rankings and can go up to 15th if beating Alcaraz. He's had an inconsistent year but did reach the fourth round at Wimbledon. He did lose in the final of the Estoril clay court tournament this year but he's only ever reached two ATP Tour hard court finals, the last being in Vienna in 2021. His last two tournaments had produced losses in the last 32 but he's finally found some form in New York. Wins have included beating both Rafael Nadal and Andrey Rublev but this looks tougher. Alcaraz is in top form and battling hard in his matches. Go for the Spaniard to win this, possibly in a match that includes a tie-break.
