Fifth seeded Anett Kontaveit bids for a place in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix quarter finals. Her opponent in the last 16 is the unseeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova. The winner of this match will take on either Bianca Andreescu or the third seeded Aryna Sabalenka. Kontaveit had a tough first match in this tournament being drawn against home favourite Angelique Kerber. It took Kontaveit three sets to win the match and had to come from behind to get the victory. The world number six was ranked 27th this time last year but since then has won five WTA Tour events. On clay, the Estonian has reached two WTA Tour finals, losing them both but won two on the ITF circuit. Kontaveit will be looking to get some good preparation for the French Open. One target she has for this year is to improve her Grand Slam record as she's never got past the third round in one. That was reached at Roland Garros in 2019, the only time she's played the event. Kontaveit has won the St Petersburg Ladies' Trophy this season and lost to Iga Swiatek in the Qatar final.
Ekaterina Alexandrova is ranked 39th in the world but was down at 54th last month. Alexandrova hadn't got past the last 16 of a tournament this year until playing on clay at Charleston last week. Only three of her last eight matches had been won by the Russian but she then reached the last four in Charleston. Her best win was against world number seven Karolina Pliskova but the others beaten weren't in the top 60. Her run ended when being beaten by Belinda Bencic in straight sets. The Russian has never reached a WTA Tour clay court final but won two on the ITF circuit, the last of those being eight years ago. Her best peformance in the French Open has been the third round in both 2019 and 2020. So far this week, Ekaterina has beaten Zhang Shuai in straight sets, both going to a tie-break. The pair have met twice before with Kontaveit winning both of them in three sets. Back her to get another win here.
