Seventh seeded Andrey Rublev takes on Jannik Sinner in the last 16 at Roland Garros. His opponent is the 11th seed and the winner of this match takes on either Marin Cilic or second seeded Daniil Medvedev in the last eight. Rublev is bidding to reach the last eight at Roland Garros for the second time, the other occasion being in 2020. He's already won one clay court tournament this year, beating Novak Djokovic to win the Serbia Open. Rublev also got to the last eight in Madrid. He's had wins so far over Kwon Soon-woo, Federico Delbonis and Cristian Garin, all in four sets. Only in against woo did he ever go behind. He's had three previous matches against Sinner and trails 2-1. Both the losses have come on clay, the most recent being in Monte Carlo this year. The only match Rublev did win lasted just three games before Sinner retired.
Hopefully Sinner won't have any injury problems for this last 16 match. He's had a consistent clay court season to date and got to the quarter finals in both Monte Carlo and Rome plus the last 16 in Madrid. Sinner is attempting to reach his second French Open quarter final, having reached that stage two years ago. He's only dropped one set at Roland Garros this year. That was in his second round match against Roberto Caballes Baena where he had to come from a set down to get the win. This looks like being a tight match but Sinner has the edge on this surface over Rublev and can get to the last eight.
