Jessica Pegula is the eighth seed in the US Open women's singles. The American takes on unseeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round (last 64). Whoever wins this match will face either Irina-Carmelia Begu or Yuan Yue, both of whom are unseeded. Pegula is the world number eight but up to sixth in the live rankings and that beats her career high ranking of seventh. The 28-year-old has had a good run in the lead up to this US Open. A semi-final was reached in Toronto and the last eight in Cincinnati. It's been a good year actually for Pegula and only Swiatek and Jabeur have earned more ranking points than her. Pegula got to the quarter finals in Australia and France and the third round at Wimbledon. One final has been reached this year, that was the clay court tournament held in Madrid The American would love to do better in her home Grand Slam as she's never made it past the third round despite first playing the US Open in 2011. The third round has been reached in the past two years and she should be able to complete a hat-trick. The first round saw Pegula beat Viktorija Golubic for the loss of just four games.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich began this week ranked 32nd but was four places lower when the seedings were published. The year began with her in 107th position and her career high is 30th achieved four years ago. Sasnovich is currently 22nd in the live WTA Race and comes into this tournament having lost in the final of the WTA 250 tournament held in Cleveland last week. A final was also reached in Melbourne right at the start of the year. Like her opponent, the best result that Sasnovich has had in the US Open is getting to the third round, which she did in 2018 and 2020. Grand Slams held this year have seen her lose in the first round in Australia and get to the fourth round at Roland Garros. The first round saw Sasnovich beat qualifier Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets. Pegula is the more consistent of the two and can get the win here in their first meeting.
